Winona boys basketball returns one starter from last season’s 15-8 squad.
“Channing Byrne will be my only returning starter from last year’s team,” Winona head coach Jarod Kelly said. “He will be a senior and will look to lead us this year.”
Byrne averaged 9 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists per game last season.
Drew Miley (sophomore guard) will have an expanded role this season after averaging 3 points and 2 rebounds per game.
“Drew Miley will look to provide more scoring, shooting ability, and rebounding,” Kelly said.
Krew Bowden (sophomore guard), AJ Paulino-ines (junior forward), Conley Voyles (junior guard) and Stetson Haynes (freshman forward) were identified as newcomers by Kelly.
Kelly on Bowden: “Krew Bowden will look to provide more scoring and open up the middle with his ability to knock down shots.”
Kelly on Paulino-ines: “AJ Paulino-ines will look to give us an inside presence.”
Kelly on Voyles: “Conley Voyles will look to knock down shots and get easy buckets in transition with his speed.”
Kelly on Haynes: “Stetson Haynes will look to provide an inside outside presence as well as give us a high understanding of the game.”
Winona should be a good shooting team, but will need to improve defensively.
“Our biggest strength will be our ability to knock down shots,” Kelly said. “We need to get better defensively, especially on dribble penetration. We will also have to get stronger with the ball and limit turnovers.”
Winona opens the season on Nov. 25 at Dora.
“We’re a young team with very little experience, so our goal is to compete in every game, and over the course of the season become better,” Kelly said.
