Tyler Holum scored not once, but twice in Springfield Catholic’s state championship win.

“He is a player who will do anything in his power to try to find the back of the net and score goals and help the team,” said Springfield Catholic Boys Head Soccer Coach JJ Adikwu.

The Class 2 Offensive Player of the Year ended his junior season with 36 goals in 31 games.

“Shooting is something I work on a lot in my spare time so it contributes to my goal output,” Holum said.

Of course, he continues to find the back of the net in his senior season, but he is also finding ways to share the wealth.

“Sometimes he is a player who likes to drop in a little bit deeper and that is perfect because it facilitates his game play,” Adikwu said. “He can look for players who are in front of him to build up those assists and allow them to score goals as much. Something I really like about him is that even if he doesn’t score a goal he wants to help other people score goals and I feel like the way he has gone about this season will definitely benefit him to be able to do that.”

Holum lifts up his teammates just as much as they do for him. Nothing highlights that connection more than a core memory from the state championship game: When Holum’s teammates rushed to him after scoring a second goal in the final six seconds.

“The feeling and euphoria of that moment is something that will probably last with me for a long time,” Holum said.

Holum strives for that feeling one more time on the biggest stage with the Fightin’ Irish.
