Wheaton softball has a new head coach in Chris Branstetter this season.

He takes over a program coming off a 12-win season, which was the most for the program since becoming a spring softball team in 2015.

“Team strengths include the varsity experience gained last year and a growing defensive identity, which will remain a focal point moving forward,” Branstetter said. “Expectations for the season include finishing above .500 and showing consistent improvement game by game.”

Seven starters are back this season.

“The pitching staff will be anchored by junior Georgia Mae Harris and sophomore Rylee Stansberry. They are a dependable duo known for their command and ability to locate pitches effectively,” Branstetter said. “Behind the plate, junior Meyah Peckham and freshman Addey Schlessman will handle catching duties.”

The field lineup is versatile.

“Defensively, the Bulldogs will feature versatility across the field. If the season opened today, junior Kinsey Pettengill would start at first base, with junior Kylie Hardwick at second and freshman Hallie Potarf at shortstop. Third base will rotate among senior Jayci Park and juniors Georgia Mae Harris and Meyah Peckham, while Stansberry can also contribute there when she is not catching,” Branstetter said. “The outfield will be led by junior Avery Schlessman in center, with sophomore Riley Stansberry, sophomore Savanna Holenda, and freshman Ashlynn Prewitt competing for time in left and right field.”

Wheaton opens the season Mar. 21 at the Cheri Nash Memorial Tournament in Verona.
