For the first time in Marionville softball history, the program will have a field they can call their own this season.
“We have a beautiful new turf field that is an amazing blessing,” Marionville coach Sydney Hill said. “We haven’t had a field to call our own until now. We are excited to have state-of-the-art facilities, especially being a smaller school.”
Hill will look for her team to play better defense as they break in the new field.
“We are looking to develop a stronger defensive presence this season by tightening up our fundamentals, improving communication, and making routine plays,” Hill said. “Our goal is to limit errors, control the pace of the game, and give our pitchers confidence that the team has their back.”
The team features four returning starters from last season’s 12-14 squad including Avigayil Bellah, Reece Workman, Remi Workman, and Ashlin Carr.
Carr returns as the team’s top pitcher from last season.
“Ashlin returns to us after a heavy workload from starting 24 of 26 games and handling just over 120 innings,” Hill said. “She continues to progress her skills and we are looking for her to dominate the circle again this year. Ashlin totaled 106 strikeouts and is looking to expand that number this year.”
Carr is also a key leader on the team.
“Ashlin Carr will be our determined and seasoned leader,” Hill said. “We have no seniors this year and will look to her to bring her experience to our younger team.”
Freshman Caysen Crumpley is also in the mix to pitch.
“Caysen is a freshman but has immense experience and skill that are beyond her age,” Hill said. “She is an invaluable addition on offense and defense. We are excited to see her transition into high school ball.”
The duo should complement each other well.
“We are excited to see Caysen and Ashlin split time in the circle and to have the ability of a righty and lefty pitcher who both have great movement and offspeeds,” Hill said.
Brylee Having (sophomore) and Aryanna Crab (freshman) will handle the catching duties. The rest of the infield lineup is to be determined. Sophomores Reece and Remi Workman return to corner outfield spots.
It was a strong off-season for the team.
“We had the most buy-in that I have seen since my time being here in the off-season,” Hill said. “I am proud of the girls for showing up, even when they were tired and busy. I am hoping that effort gives us a kickstart at the beginning of the season.”
That work ethic is one of the biggest strengths for this team according to Hill.
“Each of these athletes brings a strong competitive spirit, yet they are some of the kindest girls you’ll ever meet,” Hill said. “I’m incredibly proud of the character and integrity they demonstrate. Their work ethic truly stands out. I am excited to see where all these characteristics will take us.”
Marionville opens the tournament Mar. 20-21 at the Joplin Area Tournament.
“’All in. All game’ represents our commitment to each other and to competing at a high level from the first pitch to the final out,” Hill said. “It means staying positive, bringing energy to the dugout, and maintaining focus in every situation. Leadership comes through effort, composure, and accountability. Every player has a role in setting the standard. No matter the score, we compete with confidence and purpose every single inning.”
