The Reeds Spring girls basketball team made history on Friday night by beating Berryville 53-39 to win the Blue Eye Invitational. Reeds Spring has been in the Blue Eye Invitational since the 2009 season and Friday was the first championship game appearance and title in the 16 years Reeds Spring has played in the event.
The Lady Wolves jumped out to a seven-point lead after one quarter at 17-10. Berryville responded by winning the second quarter 14-9 to cut Reeds Springs’ lead to four at 28-24 going into the break.
Out of the half, Reeds Spring caught fire from deep. The Lady Wolves knocked down four 3-pointers in the quarter on the way to an 18-10 advantage in the frame and 44-34 lead. The fourth quarter was low-scoring with 14 combined points and a 9-5 Reeds Spring advantage on the way to the 53-39 win.
Reeds Spring used a balanced attack in the championship game with Saylor Johnson leading the Lady Wolves with 15 points followed by Emma Thompson and Kylie Fitzwater with 12 points each. Allie Johnson had 10 to give Reeds Spring four in double figures.
Reeds Spring did a lot of damage from the free throw line knocking down 16 of 20 free throws in the game.
With the victory, Reeds Spring moves to 5-0 on the season which is the first time Reeds Spring has been 5-0 since at least 2008-09 when MSHSAA started keeping records online.
In the other games, Aurora beat Sparta 57-41 to win the third place game. The host Lady Bulldogs overcame a 29-point output from Spokane’s Lily Carr to win the consolation game 59-49.
