Athlete of the Week: Carson Butler, Glendale Swim

Carson Butler has a love for the finer things. He dreams of the day he gets to buy his ideal watch.

“A Rolex DateJust with a chocolate dial. It’s definitely my favorite,” the Glendale senior said. “I look at a lot of watches. I wear a watch every day. Probably watches that I’ll never afford.”

The precision of a watch is much like his dedication to shaving milliseconds off his swim times.
Carson set the SWMO meet record for the 100 Fly and tied the pool record at 50.58 seconds.

“It was fun to watch Carson’s perspective on that to go ‘I wasn’t thrilled with the tie at first’, but then to realize it could have gone 100th of a second either direction and either the record’s all mine or not mine,” said Glendale Head Swim Coach Steve Boyce. “So he was pretty happy with the tie.”

With that time, he heads to the state championship ranked No. 1 in the 100 fly and one of the top swimmers in the 200 IM.

He spends countless hours training for this moment, but he also carves out time to be there for his teammates.

“Diving was on its own day on Thursday [separate from the swim events] and [Carson] came over on his own time on Thursday to watch his teammate Kayson compete and cheer him on and be a part of that,” Boyce said. “That’s a pretty cool thing to throw in and do.”

Whether it’s the ticking gears of a watch or the power of each stroke as he glides in the water, both are in the pursuit of perfect timing.
