Mt. Vernon’s quest for the program’s first state title came up one match short in a 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-18) loss to Helias Catholic on Saturday in St. Joseph.
The Crusaders, who are unbeaten in their history in final four matches, won the program’s third state title.

Ziah Schmutz and Camryn Cornell led the Mt. Vernon attack with 13 kills each. Schmutz also led the team in assists with 15. Ruth Fish was just behind her with 14 assists. The defensive effort was paced by Averee Swillum and Cornell with 14 and 13 digs, respectively.
Mt. Vernon completes the best season in program history with a 26-8-2 record and the program’s first team trophy.
