New Covenant wins five-set thriller to take third in Class 2

New Covenant volleyball ended its season on a high note with a five-set win over East Buchanan to secure a third-place finish in Class 2.

The Warriors won the middle two sets and the fifth set on the way to the 3-2 (22-25, 25-16, 25-23, 23-25, 15-12) victory.

New Covenant led early in the first set before East Buchanan used a 4-0 spurt to take a 14-10 lead midway through the frame. New Covenant kept it close pulling within one at 23-22 late, but the Bulldogs got a kill and a block to close out a set one win.

The second set lacked drama, as New Covenant never trailed racing out to a 11-3 lead which grew as big as 11 points with a 20-9 advantage before winning set two by nine, 25-16.

Set three was much more closely contested with the frame tied at 20-20 late. The Warriors got three quick points via two attack errors by East Buchanan and a block featuring Gabriela Gaumer and Adelyn Mourey. Kiera Edwards closed out the 25-23 win with a kill on an assist from Chloe Hurst.

The fourth set was even closer with the two teams sitting tied at 22-22 before East Buchanan scored three of the final four points to close out the set 25-23 and force a deciding fifth set.

East Buchanan looked like it might run away with the final set and match with a 6-1 run to take a 9-6 lead in a race to 15.

New Covenant called a timeout to regroup.

It worked.

The Warriors six straight points out of the timeout to take a 12-9 lead. The Warriors kept East Buchanan at arm’s length finishing the set off with another kill by Edwards off an assist from Hurst to win the set 15-12 and the match 3-2.

Edwards led the Warriors with 23 kills in the match. Addison Cuquet had 15 kills followed closely by Christin Voznyarska with 13. Adelyn Mourey led in assists with 26 followed by Hurst with 20. Defensively. Adelyn Mourey and Audrey Mourey were everywhere with 34 and 30 digs, respectively. Myan Vinson contributed 20 digs.

New Covenant completes the season with a 28-5-3 record.
