Kickapoo beats Ozark on field goal as time expires

Kickapoo picked up a crucial road win over Ozark 32-31 to close the regular season thanks to a 27-yard field goal by Wyatt Slavens-Lewis.


The victory gives Kickapoo the No. 3 seed in Class 6 District 5 and a bye next week.

Ozark got the scoring going early with an 80-yard touchdown run from Jett Easley to stake the Tigers to a 6-0 lead just 11 seconds into the game.

Kickapoo answered back with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Brock Brooks to Javon Mack putting the Chiefs ahead 7-6 with 8:47 to go in the first quarter.

Anthony Cordell scored two straight rushing touchdowns from eight yards out and 10 yards out to vault Ozark back into the lead 19-7 with 9:44 left in the second quarter.

It was Kickapoo’s turn to go back-to-back after that with Brooks hitting Will Buckley for a 37-yard touchdown with 8:11 left until the half. Brooks called his own number with 3:13 left in the half scoring on a 10-yard run putting Kickapoo in front 22-19 at the break.

Out of the half, Easley got back in the end zone with a one-yard run for the only score of the third quarter. Ozark led 25-22 with 12 minutes left in the game.

Kickapoo scored early in the fourth quarter on a Brooks-to-Buckley eight-yard touchdown pass taking a 29-25 lead with 10:22 left in the game.

Cordell got into the end zone for the third time in the game on a nine-yard run with 2:30 remaining in the contest putting Ozark in front 31-29.

That set up Kickapoo for a two-minute drill leading to the game-winning field goal from Slavens-Lewis.

Brooks was 17-for-22 passing for 208 yards and three touchdowns.

Cordell had 25 carries for 243 yards and three touchdowns. Easley finished with 17 carries for 209 yards and two touchdowns.

Kickapoo gets a bye next week and will travel to face Joplin in the Class 6 District 5 semifinal round on Nov. 7. Ozark hosts Raymore-Peculiar in the district quarterfinal round on Friday, Oct. 31.
