Golf looks simple, but anyone who has picked up a club knows the game is not very forgiving. The game does not get any easier when battling an injury.
“So last year I tore my ACL and I played with that,” said Ozark senior Josey Roberts. “And then the previous year I was in a boot for my left ankle from basketball. Then my freshman year I was in a right boot, also from basketball.”
Roberts placed top five at state all of those years even when she was not 100 percent. Proving her physical ability is just as strong as her mindset.
“I wasn’t worried about the swing as much as it was more just the mental hurdle of walking and uneven lies,” said Ozark head golf coach Daniel Mullis. “Honestly, other than a couple swings, it was spot on and it allowed her to kind of finish as high as she did and kind of surprise everybody.”
The Missouri State commit is healthy and already having a special senior season. Roberts set the new course record from the red tees at Silo Ridge golf course with a 65.
“I actually didn’t know who had the previous record or what it was,” Roberts said. “I didn’t know going into that day, like, oh, let’s break the course record today.
I was like, all right, let’s just go have fun.”
And then she also set a MSHAA state record on Monday. The senior shot a 62 at the par 70 Horton Smith golf course.
“That was just another bogey free round,” Roberts said. “I was just trying to have fun, stress free, just like again, just go out there and play with my friends, just live it to the best I can.”
Golf may never be simple, but Roberts makes it fun AND makes it look easy.
