West Plains softball is looking for a bounce-back season coming off a three-win campaign in 2024 with seven starters returning.

“We are looking to be scrappy this year,” West Plains head coach Karsyn Smith said. “I expect us to compete in every game we play in this season.”

Sophomores Jaima Bice and Cadence Tackitt return to the circle to pitch.

“While they are still young, we’ve been impressed with how much confidence they’ve gained on the mound this summer,” Smith said. “We’ve also seen them improve in throwing strikes, mixing speeds, and developing their spin.”

Senior Lily Dixon returns behind the plate at catcher. She hit .297 last season. Jewelia Willard is back at shortstop after hitting .321 as a junior. Sophomore Addi Talburt will handle second base duties. Senior Shaylee Peterson is moving from third base to first base. Bailey Wake (sophomore) is moving to the infield. The outfield will feature senior Zoe Scharnhorst in center field along with McKrae Brewer and Bailey Bridges.

Brewer and Bridges in particular have shown marked improvement according to Smith.

“McKrae Brewer and Bella Bridges have made the most improvements from this time last year to now,” Smith said. “McKrae has developed a lot in the outfield. Bella has really shined at the plate and has worked on her arm strength in the off-season.”

Seniors will be key to a turnaround season.

“Our leaders this year will be our seniors,” Smith said. “They really help us set the tone defensively. We want our underclassmen to model after their work ethic.”

West Plains opens the regular season Aug. 29-30 at the Morrisville Tournament.
