Springfield Catholic’s Peyton Wiseman has established herself both inside and outside the classroom. She’s active in several organizations for the Fightin’ Irish. But there’s one club she’s in all by herself. That’s the 10, 100, 1,000 club.
The 10 stands for graduating top ten in her class Suma Cum Laude and giving the Graduate Address at her recent graduation. The 100 stands for her 102 goals, making her the Lady Irish’s second all-time leading scorer.
“Going into this year I knew it would be nice to get it,” said Wiseman, a senior on the team, referring to the 100-goal milestone. “But I wanted to score when it would be right for the team. I wasn’t going to try and force it.”
The 1000 stands for her one 1,113 points on the basketball court, where she ranks 11th in school history. So which one is she most proud of? It’s a tough one for her coach to guess. “Well I don’t know,” said Mackenzie Serrano, Catholic girls soccer head coach. “Oh Gosh. I think [I’ll guess] 100 goals. Top ten in her class? I’ll go 100 goals.”
So close. Peyton has a different answer. “Probably top ten,” she said.
Speaking of the blend of academics and sports, Missouri State has moved into Conference USA just in time to face Peyton’s Louisiana Tech team, where she’s committed to play soccer next season. “I hope nothing conflicts with that because I really want to go see her,” Serrano said, referring to Louisiana Tech’s game at Missouri State this upcoming season.
“I’m excited for it,” Peyton said. “Obviously nothing is promised as far as playing time and stuff, but it would be amazing to be able to play here, and for my family and friends to be able to come and watch me and support me.”
Peyton does find time for hobbies. “I mean, I do like plants too,” Peyton said. “I have one it’s called a Mother of Thousands. Mine’s really big and sprawls down. And on each of its leaves it grows other little plants on it. Those come off and it can grow more plants from it.”
That’s fitting because at a program that’s won seven district titles in eight years, she’s the latest to grow into the player who could lead her team to a Final Four this week.
