New Heights Chrisitan (formerly College Heights Christian) has a storied history on the track. The Cougars have won one team state championship and six team trophies. All of that success has come thanks to 17 event championships in the school’s history.

Every one of those 17 event titles came in running events.

On Friday, New Heights senior Logan Decker made that 18 event titles with one coming in the field.

“I told my coach beforehand that I wanted it and I was going to go out and get it,” Decker said. “I asked him ‘has anybody every won it?’ and he said no. Then I told him I was going to go out and win it this year.”

Decker busted a 21-foot-11-inch jump on his fifth attempt to secure New Heights’ first field gold medal in program history.

“I had a good warmup, and I was loose,” Decker said. “I was excited to be here and excited to jump and that goes a long way.”

Last season, Decker placed eighth in the event with a 20-foot-11.25-inch jump.

How did he add a foot to his state performance in one year?

“Hitting the weight room does a lot,” Decker said. “That does a number that I don’t think people understand really.”

Decker was a four-sport star for New Heights in his senior season playing football, basketball and golf in addition to track.

“It (playing multiple sports) keeps me in shape and keeps me moving. In every sport you are jumping, bounding or sprinting,” Decker said. “That all adds up in track. It is a combination of all those.”

Decker also earned all-state honors in the high jump placing sixth.
