Wyatt Doak was trying to recover from both finals and project graduation early Saturday morning when the phone rang.

Not only was the Galena senior late to the district track meet, he was also still two hours away.

“Well, my school got sent the wrong schedule, so I woke up to a phone call saying, get to the track now,” Doak said. “So two hours away, that’s kind of stressful. So I got here around 10:00, They waited on me, and I just instantly warmed up.”

Despite the anxiety and stress from a 120-minute scramble, Doak calmly jumped his way into a triple jump victory. A short time later, he added a high jump title to his day’s achievements.

Doak credited the chaos and confusion for helping him focus and complete at a high level on Saturday.

“So it kind of, it kind of just built a fire in me,” Doak said. “It kind of just made me mad. So it kind of really helped, actually. But yeah, I kind of just used my competitive nature, and it worked out.

“it’s like a whole different me. So my family and friends know, like, not to really mess with me so much while competing, because I get mean – I get mad. Yeah, it’s just an alter ego, like I just flip  the switch and I just go eat.”
