Athlete of the Week: Kickapoo soccer, Elli Davison

Kickapoo soccer has a lot of history within the program and Elli Davison is adding her name all over the record books. She can score, she can set up her teammates, and she’s having a sweet time putting the finishing touches on a great career.

You could say it’s a little bit of a sugar rush.

“I gotta, I gotta eat some Nerd Gummy Clusters,” said Kickapoo senior Elli Davison.

And a pregame ritual with her childhood friend.

“When we stand in a circle to get together, I always stand by Faith,” Elli said. “She always squeezes my hand three times before we play. Every time she does that I know it’s going to be a good game.”

It’s what powers the four-year starter, who is sitting at a career-record 102 goals.

“It’s a good feeling,” Elli said. “As a freshman coming in I would have never thought I would be here right now.”

Elli surpassed the previous scoring record by 14 and is closing in on the Lady Chiefs’ career assists record.

“There’s been a lot of good players that come through here that have set a lot of numbers,” said Kickapoo Girls Head Soccer Coach Phil Hodge. “Now when you go back and look at the records that she has broken and her name is on top every single year, it’s a true testament to her and her work ethic and her desire to win and compete.”

While the All-State forward might be described as quiet, her physicality on the pitch says enough.

“To find a way to score, to find a way for a teammate to score, she by all means can be physical when need be,” Hodge said.

And that just might be the equivalent of a sugar rush for her teammates.

“Everybody’s energy is high,” Elli said. “Everybody has a positive attitude. It’s great to come out here and I think we can do some good things this season.”
“She just wants the best for her teammates and the best outcome that our team can get to,” Hodge said. “So she does everything she can to help our team.”
