MSU WR Owens signs undrafted free agent deal with 49ers

SPRINGFIELD — Missouri State senior wide receiver Terique Owens (Pleasanton, Calif.) has reached contract terms with the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent, following the conclusion of the final rounds of the NFL Draft on Saturday.

Owens’ free agent deal was confirmed by Bears head coach Ryan Beard late Saturday.

“What a great opportunity for Terique to pursue a lifelong dream,” said Beard. “I love the man and the player that he became during his time with us at MSU. The last few years have been a testament that anything you want to achieve can be achieved right here at Missouri State University.”

Owens played in 27 games for the Bears over the past three seasons under Beard and former head coach Bobby Petrino. He tallied 46 receptions for 765 yards in that span, including 28 catches for 528 yards and four touchdown his senior season.

In 2023, he had seven games with multiple receptions, including a breakout game against Utah Tech (9/23/23) with five catches for 140 yards and his first two receiving touchdowns at MoState. He also logged a season-high six catches for 98 yards in the Bears’ road win at Western Illinois (10/14/23), including a 30-yard TD reception. Owens also had a 28-yard touchdown catch in the club’s homecoming win over Murray State (10/21/23) on a day with 4 receptions for 79 yards.

He ranked 12th nationally (FCS) and second in the Missouri Valley Football Conference in yards per reception (18.86) in 2023, while also ranking 13th in the MVFC in receiving yards per game (45.5), 17th in receiving yards (528), and 19th in receiving TD’s (4).

During his time at Missouri State, Owens also was honored for his academic success, earning the MVFC Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award and MVFC Honor Roll laurels in 2022, while being honored on the Missouri State Athletic Director’s Honor Roll three times. He earned his degree in Administrative Management in December 2023.

He began his collegiate career at Contra Costa College in San Pablo, Calif. (2018) before two seasons at Florida Atlantic (2019 and 2020).

Terique is the son of Terrell Owens who played with the 49ers for the first eight seasons (1996-2003) of his 15-year NFL Hall of Fame career.
