Johnson’s nine 3-pointers power Weaubleau to Class 2 quarterfinals

Weaubleau was dominant on the way to a 76-57 win over Wellington-Napoleon in the Class 2 sectional round.

The Tigers trailed 5-0 and 19-17 after one quarter. That all changed in the second quarter where Weaubleau dominated the frame 21-9 to take a 38-28 lead into the break. They pressed that advantage in the third quarter with a 21-10 win in the third eight minutes to take a commanding 59-38 lead after three quarters. Weaubleau extended its lead to as many as 26 in the fourth.

Gage Johnson powered the Tigers with 33 points including nine 3-pointers. Dawson Stewart and Blane Durnell each had 14 points in the win.

The Tigers (24-6) will face Plattsburg (29-0) in the Class 2 state quarterfinals at 5:45 pm on Friday in St. Joseph.
