COLUMBIA — Individual championships by Jessa Joiner and Mariyah Brumley and seven medalists overall powered Lebanon to the Class 2 team title at the State Wrestling Championships on Saturday.

It’s the Lady Yellowjackets’ fourth state team championship and the seven place-winners is a new high for their program.

“To have that many people place at state, it’s great,” Joiner said.

“We’re good teammates and we’ve worked hard to get here,” Lumley added.

Joiner (50-1) pinned Fort Osage’s Aroma Marrufo (42-2) in the 110-pound title tilt.

“I think most of my technique was good, but some of it I rushed into,” Joiner said. “I got her in a chicken wing tilt. You get the chicken and run it sideways.”

“Jessa is the kind of wrestler who knows so many moves,” coach Matt Neely said. “If she sees (an opening for a move), she’s going to put it on them and that’s what she did.”

A sophomore, Joiner would like to eventually be a three-time state champion.

“That will be my new goal,” Joiner said. “I’m actually quite a bit more motivated than I was.”

Brumley (49-2) edged Wentzville’s Caroline Ward (45-2) 3-2 in the 190 final. In their regular-season matchup, Ward pinned Brumley.

Brumley won with a second period near-fall.

“She has really long arms and was able to lock her up in a cradle,” Neely said.

“I’m really good at cradles,” Lumley said. “I got put on top and it was there. I’m surprised I made it this far. It’s pretty amazing.”

Lebanon received thirds from Lilliam Cottongim (39-13) at 105 and Halea Bartell (45-4) at 125. The Lady Yellowjackets’ Taylor Johnson (41-8) took fourth at 135, while Adeline Cottongim (23-8) was sixth at 115, as was Bailey Joiner (43-8) at 145.

Willard’s Dutton caps undefeated senior season

Catherine Dutton captured her second 235 championship and her first with Willard. She moved to 37-0 by pinning Marquette’s Alyssa Washington (39-12) in 1:27 in their title tilt.

“I worked my butt off and got what I wanted,” Dutton said. “You get what you work for.”

Dutton has been thrilled with her transition from Central to Willard for her senior year.

“It’s been a freakin’ ride, that’s for sure,” Dutton said. “Switching schools was crazy. Everything has turned out great.”

She values the friendships she has formed at Willard.

“We’re really close and not just the girls, even with the guys. The team bond is insane,” Dutton said. “I came to Willard thinking everyone was going to hate me. Now, I have girls over at my house pretty much every night. I love them to death and love the coaches and love the guys just as much.”

Dutton enjoyed sporting a different hair color at nearly every tournament during her Central career, but stuck with blonde for this season.

“I have given up on the hair dye. I grew out of it I guess,” she said. “The goal is to get platinum now and we’re getting there.”

Camdenton’s Fuglsang dealt first loss in final

Camdenton’s Abi Fuglsang (46-1) finished runner-up at 100 for the second straight season. She was knocked off 2-1 on a third-period takedown by Liberty’s Lily Breeden (39-1).

Nixa’s Addison Harkins (45-6) was pinned 1:28 by Washington’s Kendra Bliss ((49-3) in the 125 final.

Nixa’s Brenya Crahan topped the Class 2 field with 51 wins. The 135-pounder entered the weekend undefeated and was looking for her third championship, before being upended Friday. She went on to take third.
