2022-23 Winter Preview: Hillcrest Wrestling

Numbers are up for both the Hillcrest boys and girls wrestling programs this season.

The boys’ side has a strong core of upperclassmen leading the way including Gavyn Walker (126), James Porter (144) and Isaac Hann, (165).

Juniors Sam Humphrey (132), Levi Morris (157) and Trey Pilkinton (120) will also have a varsity impact.

Head coach Jason Taylor also said that several sophomores and freshmen could see varsity time.

One experienced newcomer is senior David Donaldson at 285 pounds.

“I expect our team to be very competitive this season, with an opportunity to take some wrestlers to the state tournament,” Taylor said.

The girls side will have seven wrestlers this season. The three returning from last season are Sonya Hardesty (senior, 145), Hannah Gott (junior, 190) and Mayci Hunt (soph., 170).

Senior Ja’Miyah Johnson is a transfer from out of state who will make an immediate impact. She will wrestle at 100 pounds.

“Mikyla Burkhart (senior, 130), Abbi Whitman (Freshman, 135), and Nadia Woodward (freshman, 170) are all additions to the Hillcrest girls wrestling program.

“We will be competitive and are looking forward to an opportunity at this year’s state tournament,” Taylor said.

Hillcrest wrestling opens the season with a dual at home against Central.
