Depth and scoring ability will be strengths for Greenfield girls basketball

By Chris Parker

Greenfield girls basketball is looking for a bounce-back season after finishing below .500 a year ago. Two seasons ago, Greenfield won a district title.

Leading the way for Greenfield this year will be seniors Marlie Wright and Trista Torres.

Wright was named the Class 2 District 13 Player of the Year last season.

“(Wright is an) outstanding athlete that contributes on both ends of the floor,” said Greenfield head coach Loganne Hickman. “She is a game changing player and floor general for us. Marlie has the mindset of an elite competitor and will do what it takes to get the team where they need to be.”

Wright averaged 17 points and 7 rebounds per game last season with 2 assists and 2.1 steals per game. Expect those steals numbers to increase.

“Her (Wright’s) defense has ramped up this offseason,” Hickman said. “She has become very prideful of her defense and has created opportunities for the team in doing so. She has become more conscious of all her roles and ways she can help the team – even when she is off the ball.”

Torres scored 12.5 points while pulling down 9 rebounds with 3.3 steals per game last season.

“Work ethic speaks volumes for Trista,” Hickman said. “She’s a dog and just doesn’t ever stop. She brings spark to the game both offensively and defensively. No quit mindset with a skillset to match.”

The senior trio of Tatum Torres, Jasmine Feezell and Haley Gossett also return.

Feezell scored 9 points per game with six rebounds last season.

“Jasmine stepped up for us in a big way last year. It was enjoyable to watch her stat line showcase her hard work. Jasmine ended the year just shy of breaking double digit scoring average. Jazz has always been an inside player for us, but last year proved she can drain a 3 when needed. I’m excited to see where this year takes her,” Hickman said. “

Gossett contributed 3.2 points and 3.4 rebounds per game along with strong defense.

“Haley was our defensive specialist last year,” Hickman said. “Each game she had the not so fun task of slowing down the other team’s best guard. Haley worked hard and improved tremendously throughout the season. This year I am looking for her to continue pushing herself at this role while also helping the team out on the scoreboard.”

Tatum Torres returns after missing last season due to an injury.

Junior Megan Lundy along with freshmen Alyssa Dejager and Kayleigh Black will be new players to the varsity equation giving Greenfield strong depth.

“Our depth and scoring ability (will be strengths),” Hickman said. “We have the ability to have four scorers on the floor at all times this season. We will be able to score at multiple facets and positions. Our speed will be a positive contributing factor as well.”

Greenfield opens the season Nov. 28 through Dec. 3 at the Diamond Tournament.

“I want other teams to look at Greenfield and know they are about to play a tough as nails game,” Hickman said. “These girls have goals and I want them to know they relentlessly pursued every last one of them. I have several seniors this year and I want them to go out with no regrets. Be relentless and leave it all on the court.”
