Athlete of the Week: Abby Chadwell, Strafford

Strafford’s all-state senior setter Abby Chadwell isn’t quite sure if she wants to play keep playing volleyball after graduation. “I’ve heard from a couple of different coaches,” she said. “But I haven’t been involved in it recently.”

They’ll probably be fine with waiting. The senior has a real chance to finish her career in the top five in state history in assists. She says her attention is not on the college recruiting process. And it’s not on chasing that individual accomplishment either.
Just ask her head coach Ashley Bough.

“My favorite thing about her is that she’s about the Indians,” said Bough. “She’s not about herself and never has been. Never questioned any of those things. She just wants her team to be successful. No matter where we put her on the floor, whether it’s setting, passing, hitting, she just wants her team to win.”

The moment the ball is dug out, Abby is at her best. “If somebody shanks it I just worry about getting there,” said Abby.

“Abby gets to things,” added coach Bough. “She creates. We constantly know our ball control is completely different whether or not we have Abby on the court.”

Abby wants to lead the Lady Indians to their eighth district title in nine years. And this time, make it to the state title game and win, after finishing second last year. Her coach says that whether it’s volleyball or something else, she’s set to handle any bumps that spike up.

“Her potential, I feel like she hasn’t reached yet,” said Bough. “And I know she will. It’s been a blessing to me. And I’ll definitely miss her after this year.”

For now, the focus remains on Abby’s final year in a Strafford uniform.
