The Ash Grove Pirates are coming off of a 7-4 football season and moving into this fall they’re returning a few key pieces.

Including dual-threat quarterback Brock Mooneyham.

Brock Mooneyham is putting new meaning into a multi-sport athlete.

“He can catch some fish, I think if you gave him an option football, baseball, basketball, or fishing he’s going to go fishing,” Ash Grove football coach Ryan Long said

The Ash Grove quarterback is probably a good fisherman, especially if he can cast a line the way he can throw a pass.

“Having a kid like that, that’s great. A dual-threat quarterback back there, he can beat you through the air or on the ground. He does so many things for us,” Long said.

The two-year starter shined in his junior season. Throwing for 1,600 yards and rushing for more than 1,300.

“Once we started having me run the ball more it opened up much more passing game which made it a lot more enjoyable and a lot more success,” said Ash Grove quarterback Brock Mooneyham.

Brock also combined for 39 touchdowns last season, a result of experience gained during after his sophomore year.

“He took a beating his sophomore year and that’s when his toughness really came out,” said Long.

“Mostly just not being afraid of running the ball,” added Mooneyham.

It’s not just Brock’s dual-threat ability that makes him special, it’s his awareness.

“He’ll make a throw and sometimes it’s not the right throw, it’s still a completion but not the right throw, but he turns and sees me and is like ‘I know I messed up.’ That’s good as a coach knowing that you have a kid back there where you don’t have to be in his ear every moment,” said Long.

As Brock and Pirates prepare for one last ride together, his goals. are simple.

“Pass the ball more effectively, cut down on picks, and just run the ball hard,” said Mooneyham.
