Skyler Maverick Following in Sister Miranda’s MMA Footsteps

Buffalo’s Miranda Maverick has already won three UFC fights and several more at lower levels in her young MMA career. Still, Maverick says she might not even be the best fighter in the family. “I think she’ll be better than I am or ever was,” said Miranda.

She’s referring to her younger sister Skyler who just recently won her first fight of any kind. “Whenever I heard about it, I didn’t want to do it at all,” said Skyler.

The 18-year-old just graduated from Buffalo High School and had only been training for two months. Now she only had a week to prepare. As luck would have it, Skyler’s big sister was visiting from Denver. And she wasn’t going to let Skyler step into the Octagon without passing a UFC-level test. “My whole goal that day was to make her quit,” said Miranda. “I was like, if I could make her quit she’s not taking the fight.”

Skyler passed with flying colors. Drawing on the same grit she showed as a three time state wrestler for the Bison. It’s part of why Miranda thinks Skyler has so much potential.
“She has a bigger background than me,” said Miranda.  “She has six more years of experience. She started doing the jiu-jitsu with us at home. She has the wrestling background now.”

“I want to be the best,” said Skyler. “The next Ronda Rousey, just like Miranda.”

Skyler smiles a lot. But her sister says, don’t let that fool you. “She’s meaner than me,” said Miranda.

For Miranda, time in Skyler’s corner was much tougher than any time spent in the cage. “[It was] Scary,” said Miranda. “I hated it. I hated it. My dad was sitting there joking with me the whole time. ‘Now you know what it feels like,'” she said with a laugh.

With 50 seconds left in the first round, Skyler submitted her opponent via rear naked choke. A favorite move of Miranda’s. “It made me emotional,” said Skyler. “We hugged in the cage and I said I loved her.”

Skyler already has options for future fights. But could we ever see a Maverick vs. Maverick fight?

“They’re going to be like, ‘Yes fight each other,'” said Skyler. “I’ve thought about that. But I don’t think that will ever happen. I wouldn’t be able to punch my sister in the face.”

“Oh really?” Miranda responded with a laugh. “OK, then I’ll agree. I’m surprised she said that. I would have thought little sister would want to one up me, no problem.”
