Halfway baseball failed to win double-digit games for the first time since 2015 going 7-14 last year.

The Cardinals return two all-conference players from that team including Sloan Gallivan (first-team all-conference) and Grayson Gallivan (second-team all-conference). That duo along with Kolton Root will be leaders for Halfway.

“Sloan and Kolton are both seniors with a lot of experience having started since freshman year,” Halfway head coach Eric Ingram said. “Sloan is our best stick in the lineup and we look for him to have a great year at the plate. Kolton has started for the past three season mainly playing second base and has a good glove up the middle. Grayson will lead our outfield and our pitching staff.”

All three of those players along with Bradyen Keene, Isaac Ingram, Brayden Doke and Cash Fisher will be candidates for time on the mound.

Sloan Gallivan will handle most of the catching duties, but freshman Peyton Timmerman will also see time there when Gallivan is pitching.

Around the infield the Cardinals will have a lineup that includes: Doke and Ingram at first base, Root, Keene and Brody Reed at second base, Keene and Root at shortstop and Timmerman and Reed at third base.

Look for Grayson Gallivan, Ingram, Doke, Avery Brown, Fisher, Michael Carter and Porter Hensley in the outfield in some combination.

Halfway will be a deeper team this year, which means more competition for innings on the field.

“Last year we started the season with nine players, so everyone had a spot. This year we start with 16 and although some are young they have played a lot of baseball. So there will be healthy competition to get on the field,” Ingram said.

Halfway opens the season on Mar. 22 at Miller.

“(I expect) to compete everyday both in practice and games. We have a couple of experienced players but we have a great deal of youth,” Ingram said. “We will strive to pound the strike zone and make plays on defense. On offense, we want to get on base and put pressure on the other team. It’s a real simple plan and if we keep it simple we could have success.”
