As the 2021 season was winding down, the Parkview Lady Vikings were beginning to heat up.

The Lady Vikings rode a three-game winning streak into the Class 3 District 11 Tournament before falling to eventual champion Willard. Just weeks before, Parkview defeated Willard 3-2 in double-overtime.

In addition to those encouraging results, Parkview coach Shelby Stewart said it was a victory just to get to play.

“I think the thing to take away from the 2021 season is that we were able to have a season,” said Stewart, who enters her 10th year as the Lady Vikings’ coach. “Being able to get those kids exposure and play after losing a season due to COVID was huge. I felt like we took big strides fundamentally and I look forward to applying those skills this year.”

Parkview, which finished 7-15 overall and 2-7 in the Ozark Conference, lost only two players to graduation but did lose half of its scoring in forward Mikaela Whalen.

Whalen earned all-district first-team honors and is now playing basketball at Missouri Valley College.

Ally Hill was the other 2021 graduate for Parkview. She was an all-district first-team and all-conference second-team selection whom Stewart described as a solid defender and leader.

The Lady Vikings fielded a young team last year and return two seniors, two juniors and a sophomore. Stewart said that most members of her team have been playing club soccer or are involved in a winter sport during high school soccer’s offseason.

Leah Reichert, junior, defender – Class 3 District 11 first team and co-Defensive Player of the Year; All-Ozark Conference first team. “Solid defender who leads by example. She will be counted on to keep our defense fundamentally sound while incorporating newcomers,” Stewart said.
Tara Masten, sophomore, forward – All-district honorable mention and all-conference honorable mention. “We will look for Tara to become a more dynamic scorer and facilitator to other teammates.”
Emma Dragoo, junior, goalkeeper – All-district honorable mention. “We will look for Emma to take more control over the backline and continue to show growth throughout the season.”
Lilly Becquart, midfielder – “A club player with good experience. We will look for her to facilitate the ball to teammates.”
Stephanie and Skarleth Perez, seniors – “We will look for their leadership throughout the season when we are experiencing growing pains. Their soccer IQ and high work rate will be invaluable.”

Parkview will not be participating in a jamboree this season but will open the regular season at Rolla on March 24.

“Athleticism will be a huge strength as well as a balance of youth with older players with experience at the varsity level,” Stewart said. “Our youth will cause challenges this season, but if we stick to our goals and keep our work ethic high, we will see success.

“Our outlook for 2022 is to compete and increase our conference wins. We will want to compete each game at a high level and become the best team we can be by postseason time.”
