As the Missouri State Bears start their journey to the NCAA tournament this weekend, it’s the last ride for senior Gaige Prim.

Prim has been a dominant presence for the Bears on and off the court this season, but path to Missouri State required a few detours.

“I started off at West Texas A&M and then I went to JUCO basketball,” Prim said.

Before long, Prim found his way to MSU.

“This was the first visit I went on; I came down here and really liked the coaching staff, I love Dana Ford, all of the assistants and it felt like home so that was one of the big reasons I decided to come here,” the MSU senior said.

Prim stepped foot on campus in 2019 and soon became the centerpiece of the Bears.

“He’s invaluable. He’s the anchor to everything, he’s really the one that allows for everything else to happen,” said Missouri State Basketball head coach Dana Ford.

The big man is top two in scoring the last three seasons for Missouri State and is leading the team in rebounds in back-to-back years. Stapling himself as one of the best at his position.

“From a statistical standpoint there’s going to be no doubt he’s been one of the best big men to ever play here (Missouri State). For a guy like Gaige, it’s about how he’s had to come from a division two-player, all the way up to what I feel like definitely the best interior player in one of the best conferences in the country,” Ford added.

As the end of his senior season nears, Prim reflects on his time in maroon and white.

“It’s a home, it’s a family and I’m blessed to have had the opportunity to come here for as long as I have. I wake up blessed every day knowing that I wake up a Bear,” said Prim.

When that final horn sounds, whenever that may be, what legacy will Prim leave behind?

“I describe him to other people as, he’s the best teammate I’ve ever coached,” said Ford.

“The legacy I want to leave is that every time I step out on that court I was willing to die for it,” Prim added.
