School of the Ozarks girls basketball had limited opportunities to play last year on the way to an 0-9 finish on the season.

“Due to the pandemic last year, our team only had nine varsity basketball games. All our games were played between mid-January and mid-February. We did not win any games because we are a young team and every team we played had already completed two-thirds of their seasons,” School of the Ozarks head coach Andrea Martin said. “So basically, both our ninth and tenth graders will be playing their first full season of varsity basketball. However, as a team, we learned a valuable lesson about gratitude and being thankful for what you have because you never know when it might be taken away.”

The Patriots will look for a much better result this year with a full schedule ahead of them.

Seniors Kamryn Bradshaw and Maisie Goodwin will be the team leaders. Bradshaw averaged 7 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists per game last year. Goodwin averaged 3 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals per game as a junior.

“(Bradshaw) has the most basketball experience of any player on our team and will be a vocal leader for the younger girls,” School of the Ozarks head coach Andrea Martin said. “(Goodwin) is our most athletic player, who will also be a vocal leader. Defense will be her specialty.”

A quartet of sophomores in Faith Martin (guard), Kinley Sharp (guard), Holland Houston (forward) and Lily Todd (forward) will all see significant varsity action this year.

“All of these sophomores will get big minutes and will have to help our returning seniors if we are going to be successful,” Martin said.

Rae Blackwell and Maddie Lundeen are two freshmen who will see varsity action this year.

School of the Ozarks opens the regular season on Nov. 19 at Humansville.

“Our success this year will be determined by how fast our younger kids come along,” Martin said. “We will be using a lot of sophomores/freshmen. The future is bright. They’ll get a lot of chances to grow this year.”
