Marionville has seen its win total and district advancement increase in each of its first two seasons under Rob Guerin. And – with four starters returning – all signs point to that trend continuing.

Guerin, who will win his 250th career game this year, returns the most talented backcourt in the Southwest Conference in Senior Lake High, as well as juniors Wil Carlton and Blane Young.

Carlton is Marionville’s returning leader in scoring (16.2 points), rebounding (4), assists (2.8) and steals (1.5). High added 10 points a night as a junior and Young – one of the league’s best shooters – averaged 9.4 points and 2.8 rebounds.

“Lake is a talented scorer and has worked hard in the weight room after missing half of last year due to injury,” said Guerin. “We expect big things this year from him.

“Wil is a three-sport athlete who has worked hard this summer and gotten stronger in the weight room. He has the ability to score from anywhere. Blane is a great shooter and has worked hard in the weight room. We expect him to again play a big role this season.”

Seniors Wyley Brown and Jacksen Smith are both back after playing 25 games each last season. They add toughness and the ability to defend multiple positions. Junior Kolby Ghan and sophomore Hugh Eaton will also see increased roles this year, providing depth in the frontcourt and backcourt respectively.

Sophomore Gage Guerin will look to take a step forward after playing meaningful minutes at point guard last year.

“Gage is a quick point guard who can defend really well. He has a high basketball IQ,” said Guerin. “He played great minutes down the stretch as a freshman and we look for him to continue that this year.”

Fellow sophomores Garrett Grimm and Isaac Stimpson, as well as freshman Brayden Bellah, will also see varsity action.

This is a program eager to take the next step and compete for conference and district championships.

“This year we expect to use the experience from last year and continue to improve,” said Guerin. “We expect every player to come ready to compete every day as well as grow and improve on what we were able to accomplish last year.”

Marionville will open the season on Nov. 29 by hosting their own invitational.
