Cabool boys basketball will be a young team this year with just two sophomores returning from last year’s team that finished 13-13.

Josh Shockley and Trey Atkins both saw action on the varsity level as freshmen last year and are the only returning players with any varsity experience.

Shockley, who is 6’3, averaged five points and three rebounds per game as a starter last year.

“Due to injury, Josh was pushed into the starting lineup last year for us game one,” Cabool head coach Brad Shockley said. “He did a nice job taking care of the ball and defending. He has worked hard this summer.”

Atkins averaged two points and two rebounds per game as a freshman.

“Trey also was pushed into a considerable amount of playing time last year due to injuries,” Shockley said. “He is a very athletic kid that plays hard and has put time in this summer.”

The junior trio of Brady Byerly, Evan Counts and Tristan Bruns along with sophomore Aceton Gonzalas will all be expected to contribute.

Shockley on Byerly: “Hard-nosed competitor that loves to rebound and pass. His motor will be a pig part of how we go.”
Shockley on Counts: “Another hard-nosed player that is capable of hitting some shots.”
Shockley on Bruns: “Tristan has put in a lot of time and could be a key for us in the paint.”
Shockley on Gonzalas: “Aceton is capable of shooting the ball from deep and has worked hard this summer to improve his ball handling. I look for him to hit some big shots for us.”

Sophomores Tyler Fleetwood, Seth Owens and Wil Tucker will also push for time on the varsity team.

Cabool opens the season Nov. 29-Dec. 4 at the Strafford Tournament.
