The Camdenton Lady Lakers are looking to bounce back from their 2020-21 season, which saw the team finish 10-14 overall and 4-5 in the Ozark Conference.

“We did not have the season we wanted last year,” said head coach Stacy Caffey, who has compiled a 149-86 record in 11 seasons at Camdenton. “We competed hard and just didn’t finish games well. We had some positive moments in our season, one was taking second in the Willard tournament.”

The Lady Lakers did lose Olivia Whittle, a strong defensive player, to graduation, but return the core of their lineup from last year in Payton Kincaid, Elle Turner, Sarah Holmes, Mya Hulett and Charlotte Kurtz.

“We have high expectations for ourselves this season and I believe these five seniors are hungry and determined for a different outcome this season,” Caffey said.

• Payton Kincaid, averaged 18 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals per game, while shooting 52 percent from the field – A three-time all-district and all-conference player, earned second-team All-OC and first-team all-district honors last season, and is just shy of her 1,000th point. Kincaid is receiving college interest. “Payton has been a huge impact for us the last few years,” Caffey said. “She plays a very fast and explosive game. I love how hard she plays and how coachable she is.”
• Elle Turner, averaged 11 ppg, 3 assists per game, 2 spg – Was an all-conference honorable mention and all-district first-team selection last season, and is receiving college interest. “Elle is a player that coaches love to have. She never subs herself out in drills; is that player you can count on to stay after practice and continue to work on her game. Elle will play wherever you need her and give it her best every time she steps on the court.”
• Sarah Holmes, averaged 3 apg, 2 spg – “Sarah brings defensive intensity to a whole new level. She definitely raises the expectation when it comes to communicating, effort and intensity.”
• Mya Hulett, averaged 10 ppg, 4 rpg, 2 spg – “Mya is such a strong athlete. She has the ability to get to the rim and make things happen, not only offensively but defensively as well.”
• Charlotte Kurtz, averaged 8 ppg, 6 rpg – “Charlotte is such a strong player. You definitely cannot take her size (5-foot-4) for granted. She is a force inside and plays so hard. You can always count on her to make something happen.”

“Each of these young ladies plays such an important key role in our team,” Caffey said. “Every season, their games improve, and I cannot wait to see what they bring this season.

“They have the varsity experience, the athleticism needed, they work hard – now it’s just time to do – put it all together and leave it all on the court. We have a tough schedule ahead of us for sure, but I have no doubt these girls will work hard and earn the respect they deserve.”

The Lady Lakers have a couple of freshmen looking to compete for varsity minutes in Alyssa Farris and Oakleigh Hill.

“They work hard, have a positive attitude and bring intensity to the court,” Caffey said. “We like to play a fast-paced style of ball and we will need to fill a few more varsity spots to give us some depth. Right now, it is all about who is willing to step up and put in the extra work for those spots.”

Camdenton will participate in the Columbia Hickman jamboree on Nov. 13 before opening the regular season at School of the Osage.

“The strength of their game is the intensity they play with,” Caffey said. “These ladies go hard and bring so much energy and excitement to the game. Having strong leadership and communication on the court and playing as one is a constant goal they’re working on.”
