Bolivar, Mo. – The SBU Football team was back at home Saturday afternoon, hosting the Truman State Bulldogs who have been in the top 25 and received votes in the latest national rankings. SBU pulled off the upset, handing Truman a 27-21 loss to improve to 3-4 (2-1 GLVC) on the season. Saturday’s victory marks just the 5th win in the 32-game matchup history. Now two of those victories have come under head coach Robert Clardy‘s leadership.

Truman State won the toss and elected to defer to the second half, giving SBU the ball to begin the game. After stalling on their opening drive, the Bulldogs got the ball and marched down the field for a score to take a 7-0 lead. The Bearcats responded, reaching the end zone on 3rd and 7 from the TSU 20. It was Cooper Callis finding Preston Carson for the first SBU score.

Early in the second quarter, TSU took over on the SBU 37 after a fumble, but the Bulldogs fumbled on the next play. Truman completed a pass deep in SBU territory, but Brenden Smith knocked the ball loose before the Bulldog receiver made it to the end zone, giving SBU the ball back on their own 6. A play later, Callis connected with Jordan Kent for 85 yards to set the Bearcats up on the TSU 9-yard line. On 3rd and 4, Kent caught one in the end zone to take a 14-7 lead. The very first play of Truman’s following drive saw an interception by Chris Fuzeme, jumping the route for the diving pick. SBU drove down to the 4-yard line but settled for a field goal to go ahead 17-7. Truman State drove down and attempted a 43-yard field goal, but it fell wide right to keep the score at 17-7 at the break.

The Bulldogs came out hot, scoring on their first possession of the second half. On the ensuing SBU drive, Cooper Callis hit Cassian Foreman on a short out route and Foreman did the rest, taking it 53 yards to the house, extending the lead once again. Coleton Smith started the next Truman drive with a sack, but the Bulldogs bounced back and drove the field for a touchdown, 24-21 SBU.

The fourth quarter began with a failed 4th down attempt by SBU, but the defense held strong when TSU took over, forcing a punt. On 3rd and 1 from the SBU 15, Callis connected with Kent for another big gain. The drive stalled on the TSU 22, but Logan Turner knocked another home to put SBU ahead 27-21. SBU’s defense kept the pressure high, forcing TSU to another punt. After a stalled Bearcat drive, Truman got the ball back with 2:14 on the clock. They got the ball down to the SBU 28, but four straight incompletions on tight coverage gave SBU the ball back. Victory formation ended the game, 27-21.

Cooper Callis had another impressive game, completing 27-38 passes for 401 yards and 3 touchdowns. Jordan Kent caught just 4 passes but made them count, recording 145 receiving yards and a score. Cassian Foreman also reached the century mark, catching 6 passes for 132 yards. Coleton Smith was the leading tackler once again, recording 16 in the victory. He also had 2 tackles for loss, a sack, and 2 pass break ups. Chris Fuezeme and Bryton Lewi also recorded 2 pass break ups. Ryan Skeens was in the back field quite a bit, getting 3 hits in on the quarterback.

Entering Saturday’s game, Truman averaged 208.7 rushing yards and 32.2 points per game. SBU’s defense held them to just 21 points and 127 yards on the ground.

The Bearcats hit the road for next week’s contest, visiting the Lions of Lindenwood University. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 1:00 PM in St. Charles, MO.
