The Rolla Bulldogs fired a 322 to capture this year’s Marshfield Invitational on Thursday, Sept. 9. The tournament took place at the Whispering Oaks Golf Course in Marshfield.

The Bulldogs were led by Abby Hobbs who carded a 73. Hobbs got help from teammates Emma Hobbs (78), Callie Harmon (83), Alyssa Joyce (85) and Audrey Smith (94).

The Kickapoo Chiefs, led by Emma Post’s 82, finished second while the Willard Tigers, behind Emma Hopper’s 88, placed third.

The Bulldog effort at Marshfield put the Bulldogs in the winner’s circle for the first time this year.

“This has definitely been our best tournament of the year. Our kids shot a 374 in our first tournament, a 354 at Meadow Lake last week and today a 322,” Rolla coach Zachary Nixon said. “Everything came together for our kids today. They were making putts and making good decisions. It was just a great day of golf for them, they played very well.”

“Today’s effort was a first for us and it feels amazing. We’ve never gotten first as a team before,” said Rolla’s Abby Hobbs. “It’s my senior year and getting a win at the Marshfield Invitational means everything to me. We won as a team, this was one for all of us.”

Hobbs carded a 73 to finish second at the invite, a personal best. She wound up one shot behind Marshfield’s Marlee Edgeman, this year’s top medalist, who carded a 72.

“I recovered well today. If I hit a bad shot I’d come back with a good one,” said the Rolla senior. “I also got a few birdies today so that helped to keep my score down. Overall I’m really happy today. Happy with my effort and happy that we got the win.”

After a tough outing last week the Kickapoo Chiefs, this year’s Marshfield runner-up, went back to work.

“We struggled a little bit last week at Camdenton so we went back to the basics during practice and focused on a few things that we needed to address,” said Kickapoo head coach Justin Drane. “Doing so really paid off for us, our girls played very well today.”

“We had three girls record personal bests today. Emma Post carded an 82, Olivia Doran-Pellham an 85 and Sara Trotman a 94,” said Drane. “So it’s a good day to be a Kickapoo Lady Chief.”

Marshfield’s top medalist Marlee Edgeman has been fine tuning her game for the past three weeks, and it’s working.

“I shot a 78 at the Springfield Invitational, a 74 last week here during the Seymour Invitational and a 72 today,” said Edgeman. “I’ve been putting in a lot of time on the course, practicing, and it’s really been helping.”

And how did she feel about her round on Thursday.

“I was pretty happy overall. I hit all my fairways and just played my game,” she said. “I think I could have putted better by I’m not going to complain.”

“Marlee has been putting in a lot of quality time here, at Hickory and in Springfield,” said Marshfield coach Cheratin Hunter. “All that hard work is beginning to pay off for her. It’s definitely showing, as it did today.”
