Nixa native Courtney Frerichs qualifies for Olympics

Nixa native Courtney Frerichs has qualified for her second Olympics in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:11.79.

Frerichs, who fell in the first round of the event, took no chances in the final never dropping below second place in the race. She led the race in laps five and six before eventual champion Emma Coburn took control.

Frerichs placed 11th in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2016 Olympics. In 2018, Frerichs set the American record in the steeplechase with a time of 9:00.85.

Frerichs will start her Olympics on Sunday, Aug. 1 in Tokyo. The first round of the 3,000-meter steeplechase is scheduled to be contested between 10 am and 1 pm in Tokyo. That will 7pm to 10 pm on Saturday, July 31 in Springfield. The Olympic final for the steeplechase will be contested between 4:30 am and 8 am on Wednesday, Aug. 4.
