Espy twins to be teammates once again

Sometimes in sports, there’s a special friendship between long-time teammates.

“We’re always competing. It’s always a competition no matter what we’re doing,” said SBU sophomore Brooks Espy.

That’s especially true when that teammate is your twin brother.

“It always kept things interesting. It was fun. It made us closer as brothers on and off the field,” said SBU sophomore Brennan Espy.

From the time they could swing a bat right through high school, Brooks and Brennan always played on the same team.

At Marshfield High School, Brennan would typically be found playing centerfield with Brooks usually behind the plate.

Then last year, they finally went their separate ways.

“It definitely was [strange], seeing [Brennan] in a different uniform,” Brooks said. “I’m sure for him too.”

Brennan went to play for Drury with Brooks playing for conference rival Southwest Baptist.

“It was very strange. Completely, two different sides of the field, just looking over dugout to dugout, it was weird to me,” Brennan said.

But the time on separate teams didn’t last long.

“My mom was really pushing him for [us to get] back to the same school,” Brooks said.

Now, their mom Amanda will get her wish.

Brennan is transferring to SBU, so the Espy twins will once again wear the same uniform.

“I think it will be fun,” Brooks said. “We need him in the outfield at my school, so it’ll be awesome.”

“It’s everything,” Brennan added. “He’s my brother, we grew up together, playing together, so I just want to keep doing it as long as we can.”

And so that bond as teammates will continue for at least a couple more years.
