Just like in life, success in sports rarely happens without belief. That’s not a problem for Glendale’s Isaac Wells.
“The night before, I literally had a dream about it,” Isaac said. “So, I was like ‘it’s going to happen.’”
So it was a dream come true when he fired a complete-game shutout to help the Falcons win the district title.
“We knew Webb [City] was a great offensive team,” said Glendale Head Coach Jim Julian. “I think they were held to four runs or less one time this year besides the game we played them.”
“We had a game against Webb City earlier in the year, and that was my fire, like ‘we are not going to lose again’,” Isaac said.
He was right, but even with that belief, the reality hasn’t fully set in.
“I still don’t really have my mind wrapped around it,” Isaac said.
That’s probably how opponents feel when they face Isaac.
That was especially true in the first round of district play, when he fired a perfect game versus Branson.
“I wasn’t like ‘oh, I’ve got a perfect game going, I’ve got to put this pitch where I need it.’ I was just like ‘trust your stuff and go after them’,” he said.
That type of swagger radiates throughout the entire team.
“Yeah, I mean we’re a confident group right now, especially with him on the mound,” Julian said.
That’s good, because the Falcons will turn to Isaac again in the state quarterfinals.
It’s another chance for him to be his team’s ace.
“I love it,” he said “I’m kind of a guy that loves the attention.”
But the senior says that doesn’t mean he forgets it’s a team game.
“Baseball is not a single player sport at all, so [athlete] of the week is cool, but I definitely think it’s a team of the week,” Isaac said.
The Falcons will play Willard in the Class 5 Quarterfinals on Saturday.
