“There can be snow on the track and you will see Bri in the bleachers getting extra work in,” Marshfield head track coach Roy Kaderly said.

Track runs in the veins of Marshfield’s Brianna Utecht.

“I really love it. I enjoy working out every day. I enjoy pushing myself. It just makes me feel good. It’s not like a job for me. I just really like to do it,” Utecht said.

“During COVID she was out here by herself. You could drive by the stadium and she is out here working on her own. She taught herself long jump and hurdles. She decided she wanted to be a heptathlete. That is the direction she is headed, and she has exceled at all of them,” Kadery said.

As she prepares to compete in the heptathalon at Wichita State, she is spending her time as a Blue Jay getting prepared.

“I know that a lot of people work hard, so I need to work even harder,” Utecht said.

“She is very driven. She is definitely gifted, but a lot of what Bri has is because Bri has wanted it,” Kaderly said.

And she is making history at Marshfield high school.

“She is part of our 4×1 that holds the (school) record; a part of our 4×200 (relay) that holds the (school) record. She holds the 100, 200 and long jump record. She also holds the 100 hurdles record,” Kaderly said.

Before she goes chasing records at the D1 level, Utecht has a few more goals set for this spring.

“(I want) to be a state champion in three or more events, which is crazy, but I am ranked there right now so I just have to keep my head right, keep working hard and doing what I have been doing,” Utecht said.

Utecht had a strong senior debut at the Marshfield Invitationl on Mar. 26. She won the 200-meter dash (25.44), 400-meter dash (57.94), 100-meter hurdles (14.84) and long jump (17’02.75). Her times in the 200 and 400 established new school records.
