Kickapoo is headed back to the final four for the second consecutive year after beating Waynesville 67-45 on Friday. The Chiefs will get a chance to play in the final four after earning a trip there last year before the tournament was canceled early the following week.
Kickapoo started fast and never looked back. The Chiefs took a 16-5 lead after one quarter and a 27-14 lead into the half.
Anton Brookshire led the Chiefs in scoring with 17 points. “It means a lot for our group of guys. We obviously know that last year it got taken away from us. We are excited that we are able to play it this year and make it this far,” Brookshire said of advancing back to the final four.
Isaac Haney added in 15 points for Kickapoo. “I had a lot of confidence going in (to the game) for the simple fact that I knew what it took last year getting to experience it, and I feel like this team right here has it. You have to know how to win and win at every level. Our coaching staff knows how to win, and we have a bunch of guys who know how to win. As long as we keep playing together and sticking together and playing with a lot of confidence, I like our chances,” Haney said of the victory.
Cam Liggins gave Kickapoo three players in double figures with 14 points.
Mike Lewis scored a game-high 18 points for Waynesville in the loss.
Kickapoo head coach Mitch McHenry on advancing back to the Final Four: “I think it is even sweeter because we got it taken from us last year and couldn’t do anything about it. This year we get to go back for those guys that played a really big role last year. To be able to go back and enjoy this now instead of having to come in Monday morning and tell them that the final four is canceled. Now, on Monday morning, we are going to get ready and prepare for Chaminade.” Class 6 No. 2 Kickapoo will face Class 6 No. 1 Chaminade at 2 pm next Friday at Hammons Student Center in the Class 6 state semifinals.
