SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—The Drury Panthers burst out of the gate to a 16-4 lead against Maryville on Sunday and overpowered the Saints for an 86-59 win at the O’Reilly Family Event Center.

Drury improved to 2-1 and dropped Maryville, a team that was coming off of a win over seventh-ranked Missouri-St. Louis on Thursday, to 3-3.

“I think we started very dialed-in,” said Drury head coach Steve Hesser. “Defensively, we were aggressive, and that initiated our mindset on the offensive end. We started the game with really good ball movement, and Jason Montgomery and Malek Davis hit some shots early.”

Montgomery poured in a career-high 23 points as the sophomore from St. Louis went 9 for 15 from the field and was 5 for 9 from three-point range. Conley Garrison added 18 points and six assists. Davis chipped in 12 points and five assists while Victor Nwagabarachoa ended the game with a dozen points.

Drury led 44-26 at halftime and was up by as much as 39 in the second half.

The Panthers shot 47 percent hitting 34 of their 73 attempts, and were 14 for 29 from three-point range. Drury limited the Saints to 39 percent shooting as Maryville went 22 for 56 and 6 for 23 from the three-point arc.

Drury owned a 44-31 rebounding advantage, and four different Panthers had at least five boards.

Owen Long led Maryville with 18 points and nine rebounds.
