Marionville’s second season under Head Coach Rob Guerin will feature a lot of familiar faces for the Comets.

Four starters will return from last year’s squad that finished 13-13.

The only starter from the 2019-20 roster that isn’t back is center, Kale Bateman.

“Kale had great length and athleticism,” Guerin said. “He was a great rebounder for us and gave us size in the middle. His ability to alter and block shots were very valuable as well. We will miss him in the paint.”

While the Comets will miss that size down low, they will have plenty of experience on the outside, returning their three leading scorers: senior Jordan Williams (12.7 points per game), junior Lake High (14.3 points per game) and sophomore Wil Carlton (15.9 points per game).

Guerin says Williams is a steady force to have.

“[He] is very talented and hit big shots down the stretch last year. He has the ability to score from anywhere. He has put in a lot of work and we expect him to be a leader for us this year,” Guerin said.

As for Lake High, Guerin says the junior is just scratching the surface of his potential.

“He’s a talented scorer and has worked hard in the weight room to put on some muscle,” Guerin said. “We expect big things this year from Lake.”

Finally, Carlton should also continue to improve with a full varsity season under his belt.

“[He] had a great freshman year and is capable of scoring from anywhere,” Guerin said. “We expect that to continue into his [sophomore] year.”

Junior Koy Ditmer will once again serve as the team’s point guard, after averaging 3.3 assists per game last year.

“Koy is an extremely hard worker. He will get after it defensively. We expect a lot out of our point guard. We expect him to give big minutes,” Guerin said.

Guerin says sophomore Blane Young will also contribute as a returner this season.

Other returners are Jacksen Smith (junior), Wyley Brown (junior), Austin White (senior), and Adam Phillips (senior).

Five newcomers will join the Comets varsity team in the form of juniors Kaden Kirby and Jacob Gray, sophomore Kolby Ghan and freshmen Gage Guerin and Hugh Eaton.

Guerin says Gray should be poised to make an impact.

“JG shot it great in junior varsity and led us in points last year,” Guerin said. “We expect him to do the same at the varsity level this year and give us good minutes.

The Comets hope to finish the year stronger than last season when they ended their schedule with a 2-5 record and a loss to Billings in districts.

They begin the season by hosting the Marionville Tournament, which begins Nov. 30.
