Expectations are high for the El Dorado Springs girls basketball team with their top seven scorers returning from last year’s 25-3 squad. The team is highly motivated to win a district championship this year after getting upset in the district title game last year.

“Losing the championship game was tough last year. We expected to win that game, but just fell short,” El Dorado Springs head coach Beau Swopes said. “I expect us to come in more focused this season, and I think we will be ready to compete for a district title this year. We return almost everyone from last year’s team and we should add a few girls this year that should help us.”

Leading those returning players in junior Reese Schaaf. Schaaf averaged 20.3 points per game last year to lead the team. She also led the team in rebounds (8 rpg) and assists (4.4 apg) on her way to first-team all-conference honors.

“She is very long and athletic and is one of the most skilled players on the floor every night,” Swopes said. “I expect big things from her this year. We are hoping she will grow as a leader and help make other players better.”

Macie Mays also earned first-team all-conference honors last year. As a freshman, Mays scored 17.6 points per game and pulled down 6.9 rebounds per game to go with 2.9 assists per game. Mays led the team in steals at 2.8 per game.

“She (Mays) is so competitive. She works as hard as she can in everything she does. When she steps on the floor, she is going to give you everything she has,” Swopes said. “Macie has gotten a lot stronger and has improved her outside shot.”

Junior Tevi Gurley rounds out the returning all-conference players. She earned second-team all-conference honors after scoring 6.9 points per game last year.

Sophomore post Chloe Middleton has shown marked improvement according to Swopes. She score 6.3 ppg last year.

“She (Middleton) has really committed to the weight room as has gotten a lot stronger. She exceeded our expectations last year and I think she will be even better this year,” Swopes said.

Junior Morgan Mitchell and sophomores Wriley Taylor and Hannah Klaiber also return.

Dani Ogle returns for her junior season after sitting out last year. She started as a freshman playing in all 27 games averaging 5.7 points per game.

Abbi Schmitt, Tenlie Steward and Gracie Mead are a trio of freshmen who will make an immediate impact.

“We will be a better defensive team this year and offensively we should be better in our second year running a new offense,” Swopes said. “I expect us to compete every night. Getting as close as we did to winning a district last year, of course that is a goal of ours. We will need some other girls to step up and be ready to play for us.”

El Dorado Springs opens the season on Nov. 24 at home against Adrian.
