Macks Creek softball has a new head coach in Ryan Hedrick this season. He moves up to the head job after assisting at Macks Creek the past three seasons.

The Pirates finished 12-12 overall last season and return four starters this year, but must replace the entire pitching staff.

“We definitely have a lot of holes to fill,” Hedrick said. “Knowing what I have coming back, I believe the returning ladies and new faces will provide well fill in roles.”

Seniors Kenzie Hicks, Courtney Knight and Alyssa Seaholm along with junior Molly Phillips are the top returning players. Hicks will play second base. She drove in nine runs at the plate last year. Knight will start at third base after accounting for eight total hits last season. Seaholm will likely step in at catcher. She brings a strong bat and speed after she drove in 15 runs and stole 17 bases on the strength of 20 total hits. Phillips will be the starting first baseman. She brings back 10 RBI at the plate.

Seniors Catie Gabriel, Bailey Taylor and Emma Waters along with junior Syrena Rector are the top newcomers. Gabriel brings a good bat and could play many positions. Taylor will play in the outfield. Waters will see time both in the outfield and at second base. Rector will also play in the outfield.

Developing a pitcher will be key for Macks Creek softball to find success.

“At this point in time we will be throwing all girls due to not having a set pitcher, and few key positions that are most likely set in stone as I look at the lineup card before knowing I will have the first day of practice,” Hedrick said. “I really want the ladies to give their very best effort day in and day out. I want them to hold pride in everything they do and be proud of the school they play for and also be respectful and not put themselves above everyone else. They all be given the opportunity to provide and contribute to the team but all will need to earn their spots and the best 9 or 10 athletes will find themselves in the lineup. I look to instill there is no I in team and that everyone will be treated the same as we look to escape any internal or external problems amongst teammates. This year this conference race will be trying and we lost half our key players from graduating six starters. I feel as we will rebuild but will also be losing key components after this season as well.”

Macks Creek opens the season on Aug. 28 at home against Laquey.
