Whether it was on the mound, at the plate, or in the field, Ty Wilmsmeyer did it all in high school for Glendale.
That allowed him to live out a lifelong dream of becoming a Mizzou Tiger.
“I had a great experience at Mizzou, I can’t wait to go back this fall,” Wilmsmeyer said.
In the pandemic shortened freshman season, Ty had only gotten one at bat when everything got shut down. He says he’ll be ready to make an impact in his second year.
“It’s a very big jump from high school ball to SEC ball, but I feel like I’m really coming into myself and being able to compete at that level,” Wilmsmeyer said.
Like in high school, he has several ways he might do that.
“I’m a two-way player, I’m a shortstop-pitcher there at Mizzou,” Wilmsmeyer said. “I was brought in to play outfield and there was a need there at shortstop, so I was able to come in there and I’m training as both right now and I’m ready to make a difference on the mound and at the plate.”
That’s exactly what he’s doing this summer in the Show-Me Collegiate League.
“Being in our backyard, it’s been pretty awesome here at US Ballpark,” Wilmsmeyer said. “I’ve played here for a few years now, and being able to be at home, be in my own gym, sleep in my own bed, it’s been a blessing for sure.”
While it’s ultimately a way to reach his next goal, it’s also a trip down memory lane with high school teammates and rivals sprinkled throughout the league.
“There’s still some old rivalries, and it’s fun to play against them. It’s all in good competition but it’s fun to come back and see those guys and compete against them again,” Wilmsmeyer said.
Ty was originally supposed to play for a team down in Cape Girardeau. When that league’s season was cancelled, he landed with the Show-Me Collegiate League instead.
