Evangel’s Lexie Vaught named conference Defensive POY

Senior Lexie Vaught was named the Heart Defensive Player of the Year and Alexis Cauthon was named the Heart Freshman of the Year on Tuesday to highlight postseason honors for the Evangel women’s basketball team.

Vaught recorded 105 steals and averaged 3.6 to finish the regular season sixth nationally in NAIA as she was also named to the All-Heart First Team. The Crane, Missouri native led Evangel in nearly every category including points per game (12.7), rebounds (7.7), assists (4.1), and blocks (0.7). She finished in the top 10 in the Heart in scoring, rebounding and was second in steals.

Cauthon finished her freshman season also being named All-heart Second Team after finishing fourth in three-point percentage in the league. The Kansas native averaged 10.7 points per game as the second-leading scorer for Evangel.

Also earning Honorable Mention honors was senior Kylee Moore and sophomore Brianna Vogts. Moore averaged 8.4 points per game was in the top 20 in the conference with 2.3 assists per game.

Vogts averaged 10.2 points per game and was just outside the top 20 in the Heart in scoring and rebounding pulling down 5.2 boards per game.

Evangel opens the Heart of America Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament on Wednesday at home as the No. 4 seed against the No. 5 seed Culver-Stockton. Tipoff from the Ashcroft Center is scheduled for 6 p.m.
