Gainesville softball has a new head coach in Johnica Hanke who steps up to the head job after serving as an assistant the past two seasons.

She is looking to get the Lady Bulldogs back to double-digit wins for the first time since 2015.

“Gainesville has an opportunity to start a new culture around softball. I am very passionate about turning the program around and have time to invest in it now,” Hanke said.

Gainesville will have a variety of pitchers to choose from this year led by junior Erin McKinzie and sophomore Gwendolyn Broderick. There will also be some freshmen into the mix.

The Lady Bulldogs graduated six senior starters from last season’s team, which has left open positions battles all over the field heading into the season.

For Hanke and the Lady Bulldogs, this is just the first year in a long term plan to build the Gainesville softball program.

“There is a lot to learn as and tons we can improve on. This year we will be starting a long journey and trusting the process; one that may not result in instant gratification,” Hanke said. “Our expectation this year is to control what we can control and fight our way to every win that we can.”

Gainesville opens the season on Sept. 3 at Ava.
