Parkview has a new head coach in Katrina Gockley this season. Gockley comes to Parkview after serving as the head coach at Forsyth for the past six seasons.

She takes over a program that has been on the rise the past several years. The Lady Vikings went winless in 2014 before winning two, five, 10 and finally 20 games over the past four seasons.

The Lady Vikings graduated four total seniors including two all-conference selections from last year’s 20-win team.

Janae Johnson will be the top returning player for Parkview. She earned Second-Team All-Ozark Conference honors in her sophomore year. She was second on the team with 192 kills last year and will be a middle hitter this year.

“Janae does a great job offensively and defensively. I think her biggest asset is seeing the court so well,” Gockley said. “Janae is only a three-rotation player for us so getting her as involved as possible for those three rotations is a key for our success this year.”

Outside hitters Alexa Morelock (senior) and Mikeala Whalen (junior) return to the varsity lineup. A big addition to the lineup will be Hillcrest transfer Jolene Tidwell. Tidwell was an honorable mention all-conference selection in her junior season.

Parkview will be strong offensively, but must learn to pick their spots when attacking.

“Offensively we are a pretty sound team. The girls do a great job being smart and seeing the other side of the court. They are very aggressive when it comes to wanting to put the ball away,” Gockley said. “(We need to improve on) knowing when to hammer the ball and when to use some finesse. This summer we have struggled with having a consistent defense and learning to trust each other.”

Parkview will travel to Republic on Aug. 27 for a jamboree. The Lady Vikings will open the regular season on Sept. 3 at Joplin.
