2018-19 Winter Preview: Halfway Girls Basketball

ozone-400x225-7

The Halfway girls enter the second year of the Eric Ingram era coming off a successful 14-win season last year.

Seniors Rachel Cahoj and Kamryn Voris will lead the Lady Cardinals this season. Cahoj averaged 4 points and 5 rebounds per game last year while Voris chipped in 4 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals per game.

“Rachel is a doeverything player. She has size and can play in the paint but can also step out and hit the three. She rebounds well and plays all out all the time,” Ingram said. “Kamryn plays with an intensity on both ends of the floor. She is a good defender and often draws the role of guarding the other team’s best guard.”

A trio of sophomores return to provide a punch to the varsity lineup. That group includes Madison Higginbotham, Kendall Morris and Hannah Wolford. Higginbotham will help run the point this year after averaging 6 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals per game as a freshman. Morris will be the key in the paint after averaging 7 points and 4 rebounds per game last year. Wolford will bring grit and strong defense to the team.

The freshman trio of Elavia Sharp, Bailey Black and Deztany Hoffman along with junior Hailey Payne will be new players for the varsity squad.

The Lady Cardinals will rely on speed to help make up for a lack of size.

“We are not very big however, if we choose to we can play fast and fly around,” Ingram said. “We are not big so rebounding will have to be a team effort and a desire and passion for us as a group. We don’t have a 20-point scorer but we do have some quick players that can each put up some points and we will need to score as a group.”

The Halfway girls should show the benefits of being familiar with Ingram’s system this season.

“I expect us to play hard and compete each day we are on the court. Last year I did not know what to expect not knowing my own team and the teams we play. This year we have a better handle on that. We should compete and give ourselves plenty of chances to win ballgames,” Ingram said.

Halfway opens the season at the Fair Play Tournament Nov. 19-21.
