2018-19 Winter Preview: Verona Girls Basketball

verona-2

The Verona girls finished one game below .500 last season at 13-14. That record is poised to improve this season with all five starters and seven total lettermen returning.

Senior Twilah Carrasquillo will make everything go for the Lady Wildcats. She averaged 25.8 points, 11.4 rebounds and 3.2 steals per game last season.

“What makes Twilah so special is her knowledge of the game and her drive to improve. She is constantly working on her game. She puts in countless hours at honing her craft. She has a great support system around her that she takes advantage of,” Verona head coach Brandon Weiss said. “She has really developed her outside scoring. She has always been able to shoot from outside but has never really shot it as much. My expectations are that she will lead us to where the team wants to get. She will match my expectations and then some.”

Fellow senior Rita Castillo returns to the starting lineup as well. She averaged 5.3 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 1.9 assists per game. Junior Carolina Castillo and sophomores Paige Bauer and Sydney Gamroth also return to the starting lineup. Bauer led that group with 7.2 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.

Junior Ashley Freiburger and sophomore Courtney Freiburger give Weiss two more returning lettermen.

“Our numbers will be a strength for us. I will comfortable going 9-10 deep any given night. Also we will be a great offensive team,” Weiss said. “On the defensive end will need to improve. We will need to be able to play a more aggressive style of defense.”

Senior Gwendyln Henson, junior Haille Wilkinson, sophomore Kendra Nungaray and freshman Yoselin Martinez will be newcomers to the varsity lineup to help fill out the depth.

Verona opens the season on Nov. 16 at Spokane.
