McDonald County is poised to make a run back toward the .500 mark in coach Kyle Fields’ third year at the helm. The Mustangs finished 11-17 last year, but bring back two all-conference players in Cooper Reece and Blake Gravette.

Reece was a first team all-conference selection as a junior.

“He has played a lot throughout this offseason. We will expect good leadership and good contribution from him this year on the floor,” Fields said.

Gravette was a second-team all-conference honoree as a junior.

“Blake will be a good threat for us this year,” Field said. “His role will be a lot like Cooper’s in that we want him to lead by example for our younger players and be a great contributor on the floor for us.”

Fellow senior Boston Dowd will see his role expand at the guard position.

“We will rely on him (Dowd) for scoring, defense, and (to be) our floor general that he has been in the past,” Fields said.

Cade Smith and Saul Garcia will both also be key pieces with larger varsity roles this year.

“Cade Smith will have his role increased this year as well. He has continued to grow and get stronger and we will look to him for important minutes for us this year,” Fields said. “Saul Garcia is another player that will have increased minutes. He has been our defensive player in the past and he has continued to improve his ability offensively so he also will have important minutes for us this year.”

Juniors Dylan Allison, Shaun Alik and Koby McAlister are some players that will be stepping up the varsity level this season.

McDonald County will open the season on Dec. 4 at home against Providence Academy (Ark.) with simple expectations for the season.

“Our expectations are always very simple work to be better than we were yesterday,” Fields said. “This is our mindset entering every day.”
