She said yes!  Drury assistant cheer coach Bre Corbett got the surprise of her life Saturday afternoon when her boyfriend Luke Van Someren “popped the question” during halftime of the Panthers’ game vs. Lyon College.

“We had a cheer warmed up and we practiced it with their signs and they weren’t going out there with their signs and I was freaking out,” said Corbett, a former DU cheerleader herself.  “And then there’s new signs that I’ve never seen before.”

It was billed as a warmup performance for the upcoming nationals, but the current squad raised specially designed signs with the words BRE WILL YOU MARRY ME? on them.  At that point Bre new exactly what was happening.  Luke dropped to one knee and the rest is history.

“I’m surprised he did that because he’s not really a big ‘public’ guy,” said Corbett.  “I thought he’d do something private, but I like being the center of attention, so it worked out pretty well.”

Luke had been planning this for the past five months and called it the “worst kept secret” among their friends and family.  Despite getting some pressure to propose he stayed the course and kept it under his hat until Saturday.

“I knew I had to do something like this because she likes to be the center of attention,” said Van Someren.  “Drury is her life.  Cheerleading is her life.  So there was no better way than to do it this way.”

Luke apologized for it coming later than she would’ve liked (they’ve been dating for 3 years), but said this was the only way to go.

“I just wanted to marry him so bad,” said Corbett.

Congrats to the happy couple!
