Springfield, Mo. — Glendale quarterback Alex Huston was nothing more than reserved after setting national high school records in yards (824), completions (70) and attempts (88) in a performance that lifted the Falcons to a wild 69-58 victory over Parkview Friday night.

Reserved about accomplishing what no quarterback in high school history has, saying, “I don’t really look into that stuff.”

And reserved on what this record means to him, saying, “I was just worried about getting the win. That’s all I can say.”

Huston completed 70-of-88 passes for 824 yards, nine touchdowns and two picks, throwing for 443 yards in the first half and 381 in the second. He need say nothing else in a game that saw Glendale produce 856 yards of offense and Parkview 705 for a combined 1,561.

Huston’s 70 completions broke Grant Sherman’s (Kenton, Ohio) previous record 58, set in 2013 under now Glendale coach Mike Mauk. His 88 attempts broke Tyler Hutchinson’s (Greenville, Ill.) 87, year unknown. And his 824 yards broke David Coral’s (Palisades, Calif.) 764 yards, set in 2000. (All according to MaxPreps.)

Huston completed passes to 15 different receivers, finished the first half with seven touchdowns and added a rushing touchdown in the second half that sealed the win with 51 seconds left and the Falcons up just five.

“My offensive line did a great job blocking for me and keeping me protected so I can get it to my receivers, and my receivers made nice catches and ran great routes and got open for me all night long. It was an easy day for me,” Huston said.

Despite being part of record-setting offenses back to his days in Kenton, a surprised Mauk had no idea what his senior quarterback had done.

“Really? Well, he was trying to help our team win. Any time we can do that, it’s a good thing,” Mauk said. “I’m very proud of him and his efforts and the guys who blocked for him and the guys who caught the ball for him.”

Huston’s nine touchdowns tied a MSHSAA record that’s now been set four times, three times by him.

Glendale (4-2) led 49-18 at halftime, but Parkview (1-5) didn’t give up.

The Vikings opened the third with a pair of Blake Delacruz touchdowns. Then, in the fourth quarter, scored 20 unanswered on three consecutive scoring drives that pulled them within 63-58 of Glendale with 1:32 remaining.

“We’re a team that’s just going to keep fighting,” Parkview coach Paul Hansen said.

“Offensively, we weren’t sure if we should go fast or slow. We decided we’d be us for a little bit, and when we did, that was fine.”

Delacruz had a monster game of his own, carrying the ball 32 times for 355 yards and five touchdowns, pushing the junior over 1,300 yards for the season.

“He’s really good,” Hansen said. “The first five games we played there were some very good defenses. So he’s been tested but he’s fun to watch.”

Boice finished with big numbers of well, completing 24-of-36 passes for 362 yards and three touchdowns, but also throwing three picks.

“Parkview has a very good football team and those kids played hard and came back and made it a great game there at the end,” Mauk said.

Corbin Lukes caught 11 passes for 206 yards and five touchdowns for Glendale. Huston and Lukes connected three times in the first quarter, the third a 33-yard touchdown pass putting Glendale up 21-6.

An 18-yard Delacruz run made it 21-12 Glendale after the first quarter.

Tyrone Newburn hauled in a 34-yard Boice pass with 6:20 to go in the first, cutting Glendale’s lead to 14-6.

Huston connected for scores with Ben Shoemaker for nine yards, Nader Leali for one yard, Shoemaker again for 31 yards and Lukes for 10 yards in the second quarter to put the Falcons up 49-18 at half.

Delacruz scampered for his second rush touchdown of the first half with 9:25 to play with Parkview trailing 28-12.

A 35-yard Max Nichols touchdown from Huston put Glendale up 56-32 with 5:54 left in the third. Delacruz scored on a 35-yard run on the next drive, but Huston hit Lukes for a 72-yard bomb down the sidelines that gave Glendale a 63-38 lead heading into the fourth.

An eight-yard touchdown run by Boice with 8:40 to play and touchdown passes with 4:21 and 1:32 left cut Glendale’s lead to five.

Parkview’s subsequent onside kick failed, with the ball traveling backwards five yards for a penalty.

Glendale was penalized 14 times for 140 yards. Parkview committed 11 penalties for 95 yards.

“You can’t have penalties like that in a game,” Mauk said. “We’ve got to do a better job.”
